Google Hangouts is the official instant messaging and video calling app for Android phones and tablets.

If you need to keep in touch by messaging, voice and video, you’ll want to give Hangouts a try! This app does it all, from supporting large group text chats with up to 150 people and group video calls with up to ten contacts, as well as all the usual whiz-bangs you come to expect from an IM app for Android.

Have a Google Voice account? You’ll be able to connect that with Hangouts and make voice calls, send SMS and even administer your voicemail account all right from within this app!

You’ll also get lots of fun emojis, animates GIFs and stickers to show people how you’re feeling – it goes without saying that these can be a great way to spice up personal chats and boring work meetings. You’ll also be able to do more practical things inside the app like share locations, maps and directions, share contact information and Google Calendar information, etc.

It’s important to point out while there’s a lot that Hangouts does right, it still has some things it needs to work on. Google Drive integration, for example, just isn’t there – if you want to share a file from your Drive you’ll have to go through the app itself and do it the old-fashioned way.

The app also collects a lot of usage data; how you use the app, how often you make voice calls, etc. are all useful for advertising purposes and you have no control over how this is done if you want to use Hangouts.

Aside from data collection and a lack of Google Drive integration, Hangouts has a lot of great features for a messaging app and it’s definitely worth trying out.

Pros

  • Supports Large Group Chats with 150 People Hangouts supports chats with up to 150 of your contacts, all in the same conversation!
  • Share Emojis, Animated GIFs, Stickers, Maps and More Express yourself and share important data from right within the app.
  • Supports Group Video Calls with up to 10 People You can add up to ten of your contacts to a video call; video calls have to be started separately from large group chats, however.
  • Integrates with Google Voice for Texting and Voice Calling Make voice calls, send and receive texts and more inside Hangouts.
  • Message Offline Contacts Even if your contacts are offline you’ll still be able to send messages that they can read once they come back online later.

Cons

  • Doesn’t Integrate with Google Drive If you need to share a file you’ll have to go into Google Drive manually and grab your share link.
  • Collects a Lot of Usage Data You can’t opt out of data collection and have no say in what kind of data is collected or how it’s used by Google.
